Sister Spirit to host defenders on Memorial Day weekend

by Doreen Cudnik

Our friends Wanda and Brenda Henson of Camp Sister Spirit in Ovett, Mississippi are expecting company for the Memorial Day weekend, May 27-29.

Over a thousand gays and lesbians from all over America, led by the Rev. Troy Perry of Metropolitan Community Church and lesbian activist and entertainer Robin Tyler, will ride to the aid of the lesbian couple and their besieged property outside Ovett.

munity Builders will be involved in helping with the remodeling of the five existing barns on the camp and the fencing of the property. In addition to the building efforts, money will be raised to help Camp Sister Spirit pay for expenses for a federal lawsuit to be filed under the anti-Klan act for the harassment they have received. Robin Tyler said that the actions over the Memorial Day weekend

from an ongoing campaign of violence, harassment and intimidation inspired by the religious right group Mississippi Family Values. To date, there have been over 64 incidents, including telephone death threats, mail-bomb threats, explosives at their gate and a dead dog tied to their mailbox.

Last year, Attorney General Janet Reno sent Justice Department representatives to Ovett to investigate the situation, but it was concluded that the federal government could not help because gays and lesbians are not covered under the current civil rights laws.

With no help from the government in sight, veteran gay and lesbian activists have decided to take the defense of Camp Sister spirit into their own hands.

will send a message that gays and lesbians are prepared to defend themselves. "Following in the tradition of the 1960s, the community of faith must rise once again," Tyler said. "And we need to let gay-bashers and homophobes know that when they attack isolated gays and lesbians, they aren't just taking on one or two people, they are taking on the entire gay and lesbian movement."

Plans are continuing for this second generation of Freedom Riders. More information is forthcoming. Anyone interested in organizing a group from Ohio, contact me at 216-631-8646.

Women, have you ever wondered what goes on in the bathhouses? Well, it's about time we find out. Walter Fisher and John Suter of Cleveland's Flex have agreed to offer a limited membership to women and open the club up one night a month to women only. The club features a gym, sauna, private rooms, steam room, party room, and a dungeon furnished with a leather sling and plenty of room to play. Women planning to use the dungeon should bring their own toys.

The Flex is clean, comfortable and affordable. There are video rooms where one can lounge around and view the latest girl/girl release, or better yet, bring your own favorite video and Fisher will make sure it gets put up on one of the monitors.

Latex gloves, dams and condoms will be provided for the sexually adventurous. Flex has orderd a supply of XL bath towels so that women can wrap themselves up and just relax. There will be only one man on duty who will be in the front office near the door just to check women in. He has assured customers' privacy, and will be completely unobtrusive unless needed.

The first women's night will be held on Tuesday, February 7, from 8:30 pm to 7:30 am Wednesday morning. Flex is at 1293 West 9th St., between West St. Clair and West Lakeside in Cleveland's Warehouse District downtown; phone 216-696-0595. The prospect of having a weekly women's night will depend on the success of this

event.
